How Long Do Late Payments Stay on My Credit Report?

Tony Banks asked:

Late payments do affect your credit rating but what most consumers don’t know is that it also depends on how late your payment is made to the creditor. To start with, late payments that are made to creditors but are no later than 30 days late are not reported to the credit bureaus. So for instance, you have a credit card payment that is due on the 1st of January and you are not able to make the payment until the 27th of January.

This is considered late with the credit card company but will not show up on your credit report as a late payment. It will not show on your credit report until you are more than 30days late and it will show as a “1-time 30day late payment”.

These types of late payments usually affect your score and can have a lasting effect for about 12 months. The same goes with other types of accounts such as car payments, mortgage payments, personal loans as well as secured loans.

Even if the payment is a couple of days late, the best thing is to try and make sure it does not go beyond the 30-day point. It is also important to note that these late payments can cause your interest rate to rise on your credit cards.

This may be the case even if you are only 1 day late as opposed to 20 days late. This will vary depending on the credit card company you are dealing with. You want to check with the your creditor to find out their exact policy.

How to Remove Collection Accounts From Your Credit Report

Chane Steiner asked:

Collection accounts can remain on your credit report for 7 years from the date of the initial missed payment that led to the collection (the original delinquency date).

If you haven’t paid your collection account yet, negotiate with the collection agency. Let them know that you plan to pay them off. You can try to negotiate less than the full amount if you want. The important thing is getting them to agree to remove the item from your credit report. It’s wise to get this agreement in writing before submitting your payment.

If you’ve paid a collection account in full and the item remains on your report. You will want to dispute the item with the credit bureaus by mail. When a collection account is paid in full, it will be marked “paid collection” on the credit report. It is NOT removed from your report and is still considered a negative account. For this reason, you want to have the account removed from your credit report.

Always remember that the burden of proof is on the credit bureaus. You have nothing to prove to them. They have to prove to YOU that the account is yours. Simply dispute by stating something like “Please provide documentation that the following account belongs on my credit report and that my rights have not been violated; otherwise please delete this damaging data immediately.” That’s all you need to say. One line. The credit bureaus then must conduct an investigation; they have 30 days to do so. If the collection agency can’t verify the account (most of the time they can’t), then they must remove the collection account from your credit report.

Best way to fix credit?

Johnny5 asked:

Based on my credit report, it appears as if I have established credit six years ago, and have a few minor blemishes. However, 2 of the three problems were paid in full, and are closed accounts, but still appear. One was as a result of missing two payments with best buy, the other was a medical bill that was sent to collection. Would it help to write to these people? Credit is really important to me. I truly believe it says something about a persons character. Some day I hope to buy a house, but most importantly, I am looking to buy a car in the next few months, and its important that I have the best credit possible. Thanks. Also, I have five credit cards, YES 5, very stupid on my part, but I plan to pay them off in full before the new year. Should I keep them open though?
