How to repair severely damaged credit?

~ Jamie ~ asked:

My best friend is going through a painful divorce and has herself in a real financial dilemma. I am not sure what to suggest to her. It is a long story so I won’t go into the particulars, but she was left with a mountain of debt. She is feeling overwhelmed, and frankly so am I. We pulled her credit report off of a website and it was so low…. I am concerned for her. It was less than 500. Most of what was on her report is anywhere from 4-7 years old. Neither one of them were financially responsible and she has a lot of old collection notices from utilities, medical bills, credit cards. She does NOT want to file bankruptcy, but we are trying to come up with a plan to try and fix her credit. She can’t get a car, cell phone, or even a credit card in her name. She only makes $30,000 a year and has probably $10,000 in debt. I am not sure how to help her. We are going to get her a secured card to get started rebuilding her credit.
Neither one of us is really sure where to begin. She has over 30 different collection agencies on her report. We have to get her FICO score up and quickly so she can stand on her own. How can we do this when she barely has enough at the end of the month? Any ideas or suggestions would be really appreciated.
Also, any organizational tips would be great. Between all three reports, all the collection notices on all thre reports, and the notices she has in her file, and the ones she keeps receiving…. It is so confusing, I can’t even tell you. I am not sure how to keep all of this straight.
She worked with a debt consolidation company a few years back with her husband; however, the company wanted so much money per month and they couldn’t afford to do it. I believe it was $400 a month.

Credit Scores – The Best Ways to Boost Your Credit Score

Julian Hooks asked:

It’s a common belief that an individual must hire a professional to repair their credit, when in fact there is nothing a credit repair company can do that cannot be done by an individual such as yourself. If your credit is bad, then chances are you do not have money to be throwing around to these companies. So save yourself the money and keep reading to learn how to repair your credit.

Step 1 – Get Your Credit Report. Before you begin to repair your credit, you need to know exactly what needs repaired. Get a copy of your credit report so that you know exactly what it is that has put your credit in the red. Each individual is entitled to a free credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus every year.

Step 2 – Read through the credit report and mark any items that need to be repaired. These can be any of the following.

- Incorrect information

- Past due accounts that have been sent to collection agencies.

- Accounts that are over your credit limit.

Step 3 – Dispute any information on your credit report that is incorrect. The report should come with instructions for disputing the information.

Step 4 – Resolve Past Due Accounts. Taking care of past due accounts is critical to improving your credit score. Accomplish this by…

- Do whatever you can to keep accounts from getting charged off.

- Take care of collection accounts by working closely with debt collectors.

- Pay off charge-offs.

Step 5 – Get any maxed out accounts back down to their limits. Credit utilization makes up almost a third of your credit score. Therefore, getting all of your accounts under their max values will gain credit points in your favor.

Step 6 – Get Fresh Credit. After all of the negative items have been resolved, the next step is to get positive information on your credit report. Try getting a new account and borrowing small amounts at the time: and make sure payments are never late. This will boost your score over time.

Tricks to Raise FICO Scores Fast – Proven Ways to Boost Your Credit Scores

Darin Sewell asked:

If you have bad credit and are tired of getting turned down for loans, or worse yet paying those crazy high interest rates then you need to read the rest of this article and use the tricks to raise FICO scores that I will reveal.

Before we begin I have to tell you that there is no secret way to go from bad to perfect credit overnight, it just does not happen that way. So with this in mind lets begin.

Tricks To Raise FICO Scores Fast

Get On a Budget-In order to have good credit you are going to need good financial habits. The best way to start developing these habits is to budget your money. If you find you make less then yo spend trim the unneeded items like cell phones and cable TV from your spending.

Get Your Current Bills Squared Away- Your current bills will have the most impact on your current scores and profile. Start by paying them on time and making them current. If you are having trouble call the issuing lender and work out a payment plan. But whatever you do never let them go into default!

Establish New Good Accounts- This may seem impossible if your scores are really bad but it is actually quite easy. All yo need to do is apply for a secured credit card from a

3 Ways to Boost Your Credit Score Fast

Mike Singh asked:

1) Deleting errors and negative items

Its a well-known fact that deleting errors appearing on your credit report will raise your credit score. But, this is usually done through a bank or a mortgage company. When you apply for a loan and notice errors, ask the loan officer to to a rapid rescore. This strategy requires that you have all your papers in order. You have to provide written documentation such as a letter stating that the account on the report is not yours, or it was paid or any evidence that is related to the same. You will be able to improve your credit score while receiving better interest terms on the loan you are applying for.

Even if you don’t delete errors through a creditor, you can submit this documentation on your own to the credit bureau. The bureau will take about 30 days to validate your claims. You should get another credit report within 60 days of sending them the documentation to verify that the negative items have been deleted from your history.

2) Piggybacking

This is a great technique that I’ve used with success in the past. It boosts your credit score quickly and permanently. But, you need to a strong relationship based on trust with someone who has excellent credit and is willing to add you to their account. An example of this would be asking that person to add you on as an authorized user to his or her credit card. When this person adds you, you will inherit their credit history. This technique works best when you are added to the other person’s oldest credit account with a perfect payment history.

3) The Round robin strategy

This is a well-known technique for building credit. This is done through secured credit cards. To begin with you put up $1000-5000 and obtain a secured credit card. Then you take out a cash advance up to 65% of the card limit. Using this amount, you open another secured card. Once again, you take out a cash advance of up to 65% of your limit. Now, you get a third secured card. With the cash advance you take out on the third card, you open up a checking account. The account will be used to make regular monthly payments. In the beginning your credit score will take a small dip because of the multiple accounts being opened close to each other. But within 120 to 180 days your score will get a big boost. I used this along with a few 0% balance transfer offers to bump up my score significantly.

How do I remove an account that is not mine from credit report?

julie asked:

My husband and I are trying to fix our credit so that in the future we can purchase a home, however, we notice that on his credit report there was an old account for a Mortgage Company on there, we no not own a home, that was the whole purpose of requesting our reports so that we can buy a home. It says the account was closed in 2009 most of the payments were late but it is now paid off. However is says it was opened in 1980. My husband was born in 1985. How can we have that removed? Do we have to call the mortgage company? Who do we need to deal with?
